Diablo FC Has Rich State Cup Heritage
Although the first Diablo FC teams to take
part in the annual CYSA North State Cup
won't do so for almost 12 months, they will
be standing on the tall shoulders of their
club predecessors when they take the field
seeking the ultimate prize in NorCal youth
soccer.
During this current 2007-2008 season, both
Diablo Valley Soccer Club and Mt. Diablo
Soccer League teams are competing in State
Cup under those banners while the two clubs
have come together to form Diablo FC. In
Under 11 through Under 13 State Cup play,
DVSC and MDSL each had a team reach the
semi-finals of the most prestigious youth
soccer Cup competition in Northern
California.
The U11 MDSL Shockwave
girls became the third young MDSL girls team
in as many years to reach the Final Four of
State Cup. In 2006 and 2007 MDSL Velocity
was a semi-finalist each year. The Shockwave
lost to Elk Grove United in the semis after
ringing up five consecutive shutout
victories in route to the Final Four.
On the boys side, DVSC Black 95
advanced to the U12 Final Four
before getting edged in overtime by DeAnza
Force 95 Blue. In the quarter-finals, DVSC
ironically was matched with its future
club-mates from MDSL Azzurri
and squeaked out a 1-0 win. DVSC continued a
rich tradition of State Cup successes as
Black 95 became the 43rd team from the club
to reach the State Cup semi-finals, with 12
of them capturing championships.
At least one team from DVSC has made it to
the State Cup semi-finals for 16 consecutive
years. Along with the current streak by the
MDSL girls, these are marks the new club's
teams will be trying to extend when they
make their State Cup debuts in 2009 wearing
the black and blue Nike colors of Diablo FC.
