Tournament Dedicated to Bob Fowler

The Fowler familyThis tournament is dedicated to the memory of Bob Fowler--coach, teacher and friend to many soccer players and participants at all levels in the Bay Area. Bob died only two days after realizing a long-time goal of serving as a head coach on the collegiate level. He had officially been named head coach at Los Medanos College and was preparing for the upcoming season at the time of his death.

Bob played high school soccer in his native Pennsylvania, then continued his career at Pembroke State University in North Carolina. He was twice named Pembroke team captain and twice elected team most valuable player. He was also a two-time all-league selection. Bob graduated from Pembroke with a degree in special and physical education.

He brought his interest in soccer to the West Coast when he moved to Pleasant Hill. Bob served as head coach at Miramonte High School in Orinda, as assistant at Los Medanos College and as head coach for an Olympic Development Program team. He earned his USSF "B" license and served for two years as chief coach for Diablo Valley Soccer Club.

Bob strongly believed that soccer could and should be enjoyed by as many people as possible. He was a strong proponent of women`s soccer and was instrumental in initiating the women`s program at Diablo Valley College. At the time of his death, Bob was coaching the DVSC Magic Under 19 girls team. He also continued as a player on adult teams while returning to school to earn a Master`s Degree in physical education administration from St. Mary`s College. In addition, Bob was Carondelet High School head coach for the 1994-95 season.

Bob will always be remembered as a loving, caring, supportive individual who was dedicated to his family, to the game of soccer and to his community.
