in July 2009 for the 7th annual Diablo
FC Summer Classic

26-27, 2008
Congratulations to all 48 teams who took part in
the 6th annual Diablo FC Summer Classic July
26-27. We had six different clubs claim
championship game victories. The competition was
outstanding throughout all the age groups with
three championship games going to overtime and
two of those having to be decided by penalty
kicks. In fact, six of the eight finals were
decided by one goal or PKs.
As the host club, Diablo FC is very proud that
all eight of our Gold Division teams made it to
the championship game finals with the U12 girls,
U13 boys and U14 boys each emerging victorious.
Central Marin, El Dorado, Manteca, North
Valley/San Jose and Union FC also brought home
first-place medals to their clubs. Mustang and
Heritage were also finalists.
Thank you to tournament directors Gina Paff and
Deby Vaughn for their dedication in making this
tournament a success. Also kudos to referee
coordinators Alex Delgado and John Antaki for
having 100% coverage at all the games.
Finally, a very special note about the Jesa
North Valley/San Jose Thunder. They defeated
Diablo FC 95 on penalty kicks in the U13 finals
but they had already won just by participating.
The team coached by Jodi Washington suffered an
unfathomable loss the Sunday before the Summer
Classic when Hannah Welker, #47 for the Thunder,
was killed in a car accident returning with her
mom Heidi and older sister Sarah from a Southern
California tournament. The Thunder decided to
play in the Classic in honor of their teammate
and wore special warm-up shirts memorializing
Hannah. At the Sunday afternoon awards ceremony
Sarah was given Hannah's first place medal.
