July 21, 2009 Stout defense, “amazing” goalkeeping and toughness playing in stifling heat gave coach Megan Swann’s Diablo FC 91 girls what it took to win the Turlock Mid Summer Classic over the weekend. The U18 team registered three consecutive shutouts at Turlock in preliminary games: 3-0 against Benicia Arsenal, 1-0 over Cal United Envy and Sunday morning tying Manteca 0-0.
This put the girls up against Sonoma SC Team Excel in the finals. Diablo FC conceded its first goal of the tournament to go down 0-1 but came back to tie 1-1 on a goal by Shawnna Moyer. That’s how regulation time ended. Because of the extreme heat in Turlock---temps reaching 110 degrees--- the teams agreed to cut the overtime periods in half to five-minute periods. It was rumored that the Sonoma coach, upon agreeing to the shortened OT periods, said, “Good, we’ll hold them for 10 minutes and win on penalty kicks.” In the second overtime with about one minute left Chelsea Fredenburgh scored a golden goal off a corner kick from Alexis Myers to win the tournament for Diablo FC 91.
Myers netted two goals and Kirsten Pouch one in the victory over Benicia. Pouch also scored the goal giving the team a victory over Cal United Envy. Diablo FC 91 defenders, who only allowed one goal the whole weekend, include Cherie Lapating, Stephanie Deboer, Becca Lisle, Pamela Ramos, Kelsey Catania and Ari Sherman. Midfielders include Katie Salmon, Marie Heard, Natalie Piwek and Katie Dudoroff. Forwards are Myers, Pouch, Moyer, Fredenburgh, Kelsey Bibiano and Andi Corrigan. “She had an amazing weekend,” is all coach Swann could say about her goalkeeper Kellie O’Brien. Davis Legacy College Showcase The Turlock championship came one week after Diablo FC 91 played in the Davis Legacy College Showcase. They reached the U19 championship division semi-finals but lost in penalty kicks to Sacramento United Elite. Brianna Lampe and Stephanie Fisher added to the Diablo FC 91 defense during the Davis Legacy College Showcase, but were on vacation for Turlock. The team also had guest players and former teammates Chelsea Smith and Molly Maher at Davis.
Three other older teams from Diablo FC played at Davis July 10-12 with nearly three dozen college coaches on hand to observe potential recruits. The Diablo FC 92 girls of coach Richard Weiszmann started a streak of four high caliber tournaments in five weeks by reaching the finals of the U17 premier division. The team routed four consecutive opponents: 9-1 over EC United 93, 6-0 over Auburn Blaze, 4-0 over San Juan Spirits 93 Blue and 4-1 over host Davis Legacy Extreme in the semi-finals. They were defeated by Santa Rosa United Thunder 4-1 in the championship game in a matchup of two of Northern California’s U17 powerhouses. Santa Rosa is the only team to defeat Diab
